In May 2014, ZACS, Kidz2gether, Greenfold Parent’s Group, Daytrippers, COG, Breaking Barriers and the Information Advisory Service (IAS) came together to form Bolton Parent Carer Consortium.
Parent carer forums exist in almost all local authorities across England. These forums share the same aims and objectives as us, however by forming a consortium we have created a unique style of forum.
The main aims of all forums are to work with local authorities, education settings, health providers and other providers to make sure the services they plan and deliver meet the needs of disabled children and their families. To do this we need to hear the voices of as many parent carers as possible. By joining established groups together and sharing information and knowledge we are able to reach an audience of parent carers from across Bolton that represent wide ranging disabilities, ages, cultures and experiences.
From a starting point of 7 local voluntary organisations, we have grown to be a consortium that is proud to now include 17 organisations and we continue to grow. The participation of such a wide network of organisations means that not only do we have the ability to reach hundreds of Bolton families, but we can also draw upon years of experience from parent carers who have been actively involved in these organisations and groups for many years.
We are funded by the Department for Education who provide a grant for one forum in every local authority area to support their participation and activity.
